Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Church celebrates the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary every year on September 8. This feast falls exactly nine months after the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (December 8). Only three birthdays are celebrated in the liturgical calendar: Jesus, John the Baptist, and Mary. This makes her birthday a day of great importance and joy. On Mary’s birthday, we’re invited to honor her! Who doesn’t love a birthday celebration? Just as we celebrate Jesus’ birthday on Christmas, let us also ponder the importance of September 8th as a day we honor Our Lady. I believe that the Blessed Mother can inspire us as Catholic mothers to grow in holy motherhood—no matter how old we are as we seek to Honor Mary!
Growing in Virtue Like Mary
Let us reflect on three virtues that can guide us in becoming more like the Blessed Mother.
1. Humility
Scripture: Luke 1:38 – “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.”
Reflection: Mary recognized that her greatness was God’s gift. She gave Him all the glory.
Motherhood Connection: As moms, humility means thanking God for our children, giving Him the glory for their gifts, and staying grounded in His grace.
Example: Not comparing our children to others but celebrating how God uniquely made them.
Practical Tip: Practice humility by serving without needing attention—and by ditching the temptation to complain. A humble mother serves with love.
Ask Yourself: How can I grow in humility and be more like the Blessed Mother? What vice do I need to ditch?
2. Faith
Scripture: Luke 1:45 – “Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”
Reflection: Mary trusted God’s plan even when it was mysterious.
Motherhood Connection: Moms are called to model “steady faith” for their family, especially in the hard moments. Our words and example matter so let us ponder how we want to express our faith and remember we are always an example to our family.
Catechism Tie-In: “Faith is a gift of God, a supernatural virtue infused by Him.” (CCC 153)
Reflection Question: What does it mean to be spiritually steady as a mom? How can be a more of an example of faith in God to my family?
3. Charity / Love in Action
Scripture: Luke 1:39 – Mary went in haste to Elizabeth. and the importance of Christian Faith where we read that Faith is patient and kind in 1 Corinthians 13:4 .
Reflection: Mary’s love was prayerful and practical—she went out of her way to serve with joy. Her Material Love has inspired generations to better love their families! The depiction of the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus, known as the “Madonna and Child,” is one of the most enduring themes in Christian art. early Christian art in the Catacomb of Priscilla in Rome features one of the earliest known portrayals of the Madonna and Child, dating back to the late 2nd century .
Motherhood Connection: Moms are constantly pouring themselves out—laundry, meals, late nights. When done with love, even these hidden sacrifices become holy.
Example: The difference between doing chores with resentment vs. offering them as acts of love for God and family.
Reflection Question: How do we keep charity alive in the daily grind of motherhood?
