In today’s world, mental and emotional struggles seem more prevalent than ever. Bishop Barron once shared that, ”God created human beings in his image and likeness to be life-giving, happy, and whole.” The importance of discovering inner peace and freedom in Christ can be found in the Gospels, and affirmed by our Church. In my book, *Holy Habits from the Sacred Heart*, and honoring St. Dymphna, the patron saint of mental health, I present five simple steps to nurture your mental well-being through faith.
1. Be Open to the Truth
Jesus assures us, “The truth will set you free” (John 8:32). Embracing this truth requires docility—being open and humble, willing to receive guidance and wisdom. Pride often blocks our path to healing and growth. As Revelation 3:20 tells us, Jesus stands at the door and knocks, waiting for us to respond. By identifying His voice and opening our hearts to His love, we begin our journey toward spiritual health.
In *Holy Habits from the Sacred Heart*, I share a personal story of how my own “love tank” ran on fumes, prompting me to turn to the Lord and make healthy changes. This openness not only benefited me but also enriched my family life.
2. Allow Jesus to Touch Your Heart
St. Margaret Mary said, “He will produce and work in souls by establishing the reign of His pure love in well-disposed hearts.” Love is the key to spiritual transformation. Handing over our hearts to Jesus allows Him to bless and guide us gently.
Small steps lead to big changes. For instance, giving up a vice such as overeating, swearing, or overindulging in media can significantly impact our lives over time. Embrace the gradual process of spiritual growth, knowing that Jesus works patiently within us.
3. Ditch Shame
In Chapter 2 of my book, I discuss the importance of welcoming the light and overcoming shame through faith in God’s grace. True remorse motivates change, but clinging to shame prevents us from experiencing the freedom Christ offers.
Jesus seeks to liberate us from the chains of shame and blame. He wants us to accept our human flaws and weaknesses, allowing Him to rewrite our life stories. Don’t withdraw from the divine physician; instead, embrace His healing. Learn to say, “I am sorry; I will work on that,” and move forward with a renewed spirit.
4. Embrace the Gift of Forgiveness
Loving others and learning to forgive are crucial tasks for Christians. As Romans 12:21 advises, “Do not be conquered by evil but conquer evil with good.” Forgiveness is not about a feeling but a decision to let go, freeing our hearts to love God and others more deeply.
We all hurt those we love the most, and we are all flawed. Don’t place limits on forgiveness. Aim to rise above trivial matters and maintain the joy, peace, and love of the Gospel in your heart. Embrace the sacrament of Confession as a powerful tool for forgiveness and renewal.
5. Seek God’s Peace
Our God desires to give us peace, a peace that transcends understanding. Embrace gratitude and joy daily. Reflect on what peace looks like for you as a Christian and seek ways to become more peaceful and joyful.
Thank God daily for His blessings. Consider how you can embody peace and joy in your interactions and lifestyle. By cultivating these holy habits, you can experience the profound peace and wholeness that come from a close relationship with God.
By integrating these spiritual practices into your life, you can improve your mental health and build stronger, more healthy relationships. Remember, Jesus calls us to live life fully and joyfully, embracing His love and peace every day.
